A significantly injured brain cannot rest enough to heal. An sprained ankle can recover because you can truly rest because it can be taken out of daily use. However, no brain (health or injured) can ever rest.
Even while your body is sleeping, a healthy brain still consumes 20% of the oxygen inhaled. An injured brained requires 2-3x as much oxygen to heal as well as function… even at a basic level.
Anyone who tells a TBI patient to “rest” without using oxygen to heal your brain fully does not understand the above facts.
Breathing extra oxygen continuously 24 hours per day is not practical for most patients to help them recover from a TBI. Using hyperbaric oxygen for 1 hour per day can provide the same or greater level of oxygen saturation as breathing oxygen all day long.
Oxygen, in the brain, when dosed appropriately, helps to provide energy directly for the neurons, to better improve their ability to function as well as heal. Using oxygen to help the brain must be done correctly with medical guidance.
